Birgitta E. Kuehn, MBA, Healthcare Executive Consultant, Plymouth Board of Health Chair

Ms. Kuehn has over twenty years of healthcare experience in developing and leading cardiovascular programs, particularly in the development and operational leadership of service lines, cardiovascular institute modeling, and physician practice integration and quality oversight. Ms. Kuehn most recently served as the Administrative Director of the Cardiovascular Institute for Lifespan, the largest healthcare delivery system in southeast New England, where she provided leadership to a 44-physician cardiology practice across a complex delivery system to ensure a systems approach to market share capture, program integration, quality and fiscal soundness. Prior she served as Vice President of Operations at SSM St. Mary’s in Madison where she was charged with restructuring cardiovascular services, building a structural heart program and operationalizing new hybrid programs. Ms. Kuehn also served as administrative director of the Heart and Vascular Institute for the Alexian Brothers Health System – Amita Health, in metro Chicago.

Ms. Kuehn’s cardiovascular program career began when she became the Chief Perfusionist for NorthShore University Health System’s new open heart surgery program in the Chicago area. During her nearly two-decade tenure with NorthShore she was chosen to start-up cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology programs at Swedish Covenant Hospital and Highland Park Hospital. Mentored by well-known cardiovascular experts, John Goodman and Joane Goodroe, Ms. Kuehn was hired by Cape Cod Healthcare to lead the development of its cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology programs affiliated with Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, all of which required faculty and staff recruitment and significant operational realignment.

Ms. Kuehn continued her work in new cardiac surgery program feasibility and development with Corazon Consulting, where her focus turned to implementation and operations of the cardiovascular service line. She has significant experience in academic administration in cardiology and implementing “systemness” in cardiovascular services.

Ms. Kuehn is a licensed perfusionist, she received her master’s in business administration from the JL Kellogg Graduate School of Management; her training in extracorporeal technology from the Loyola University School of Perfusion in Chicago and her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
